Hi everyone! I hope you’re all enjoying your summer. As you all know, I work two jobs and work on my grad school class assignments, so my summer has been pretty packed! I also have gone to the beach a couple of times and had to attend some family events, so there’s been a fun sprinkling of leisure in there too. One thing literally all of these things have in common? I’m constantly on the road. I’m usually pretty lucky to have someone in the driver’s seat, whether it’s my brother driving me into the city, my boyfriend driving me to the beach, or taking the bus home from the city. Being a passenger does have it’s perks, such as being able to read!
Now, normally, I get pretty carsick when I read during my daily transportation, but the bus does happen to work miracles! (I happen to think it’s because the bus is so big you don’t really feel how fast it’s going…or maybe it’s the traffic…who knows?) I was also fortunate enough to have a brand new Dollar Tree around the corner from my house, so I was able to get some pretty top notch books for just a dollar! I found other books at the Book Exchange Shop in Long Beach Island called LBI Book Swap where I found great literature for fantastic prices. I was so lucky!
So here is my reading list for the summer! I’m a pretty fast reader; once I start, I can’t stop! I usually like to read before bed too, but that’s usually for nights when I can’t sleep. Take a look at my list below, and comment if you found any good reads this summer!
Something Blue by Emily Griffin
A book about a selfish girl who gets knocked up by reality and has to get a reality check. I
hated the character at first, but towards the end, she somewhat grew on me. It’s an easy read, and Emily Griffin writes in a way that makes you feel as if you’re just talking with your girlfriends. It’s a fun read, and I’m glad my summer started out with this book!
The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by: Amy E. Reichert
What. A. TRIP! I finished this book in 2 days, thanks to traffic and the compelling storytelling by _____________. A chef finds out her crummy fiancé was cheating on her the day a
pretentious critic comes to her struggling restaurant. Of course, she goes to a bar and meets this critic (without knowing its the guy who rips her restaurant apart) and they start to date. You can only imagine where this is going! It’s such an adorable read; I couldn’t put it down!
Leave Your Mark: Aliza Licht
I actually won this book in a giveaway during Easter time and was very excited to read this.
The author, Aliza Licht, the chief creative officer at high fashion brand Alice & Olivia, tells us how to “leave our mark” while getting a job. She herself went to school for plastic surgery
practice, and is now a huge part in the fashion public relations world. This book explains how we can live our best life and how we can stand out from the thousands of resumes that employers get every single day. It was a great read, and it’s a wonderful book to read right before graduation! If you need a grad gift or even if you’re a professor and you need a book for class, I highly recommend this one.
I just started this series, and so far I like it! It dives into the life of the wealthy elite in Singapore, and it’s truly insightful. It's about how an average girl from New York is dating the hottest and most eligible bachelor in Singapore...and she doesn't even know about his status! He invited her to a friend's wedding and boy, does she get the surprise of her life. I'm almost finished with the first one, and can't wait to see how the next two pan out! Also, it's a movie that comes out this summer, so once I'm finished reading the first one, I'll deff be going out to see it! (Thanks Moviepass!)
The Casual Vacancy by: J. K. Rowling
Would I really be human if I didn’t have at least 2 books started at once? Come on, we’ve all done it at some point. I picked this book because it was a novel by J.K. Rowling that wasn’t a part of the Harry Potter series, and I wanted to see if I enjoyed her writing in something that wasn’t meant to be for children. So far, it’s chilling and tantalizing. It’s about the fight for the position of the chair in the church of a man who died suddenly. The politics that go on in a small town church is astounding, and seeing how low people can stoop is riveting. So far, J.K. Rowling is living up to her name, and I’m honestly relieved. It's also a show on HBO!
Fashion In Film by: Christopher Laverty
I got this book as an Easter gift from my boyfriend. This isn't a book that you bring with you on the bus, it's more of a coffee table book. I absolutely love it. It goes on about the different designers who have created iconic outfits in film, and the way it's laid out is nicely organized. It's an easy read, and I know for a fact that this book can be THE main topic of party conversation at your next get together at your place. Looks great on your coffee table too!
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by: Mindy Kaling
I am a humongous fan of the show, The Office. I watched it when it first premiered and even remembered when my classmates told me it wasn't funny and was too boring to even be entertaining. In the words of Michael Scott, "Well, well, well, how the turn tables...". Mindy Kaling, one of the writers and actors in the hit tv series, wrote a book that actually gives out great advice! Sometimes you need advice from a successful person, but it's advice like, "Wake up at the crack of dawn every day and send out 80 resumes." Kaling on the other hand, is relatable and helpful; it feels as if I'm talking to my of my friends. It's funny, helpful, and a feel-good read.
