You've heard of Josephine Baker, right? The famous singer from the 1930's? Well, if you
haven't, here's your chance! Born in America, she was forced to take her singing act to France, where she was welcomed and she thrived. Fast forward to present day, she's hailed as an icon, and has a restaurant dedicated to her in Midtown, New York City, called Chez Josephine. Here, they serve French cuisine in one of the most gorgeous small spots in Manhattan. It's perfect for a date, dinner before a show, or even a client dinner!
Address: 414 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036 (Midtown)
The art-deco designed restaurant is absolutely stunning from the second you walk in; you're immediately transported back in time, and you're treated like absolute royalty! The first time I went there, I was incredibly lucky to meet her grandson, who has since passed away.
The ambiance is to die for; there's a piano player towards the back of the restaurant playing her top hits. Paintings of her infamous costumes hang, educating the newcomers and letting them know how extraordinary she was, especially for her time. The dim lighting adds a little extra mystery to the place; it's very small in there, so you never know who you're going to run into.
The last two times I went, I had the pork chops, which happened to be served with a mushroom risotto, and yes, I'm getting it the next time I go! Their portions are large enough that you feel full at the end, but not so large and heavy that you go into a food coma at the end of the night. I went there on Valentine's Day and was so relieved that I didn't feel the need to fall asleep immediately after eating like I usually do! French food is slowly but surely becoming a top category in my book.
I would highly recommend coming here. Anytime literally anyone asks me where to eat in the city, this is the FIRST place I suggest every time. They luckily have a deal during restaurant week where you can have lunch for $22 or dinner for $42, which is an ABSOLUTE STEAL in New York! Also, I would suggest getting the bottle of wine instead of individual glasses, you get more bang for your buck believe it or not!
Let me know what you think! I would love to hear about your experience at Chez Josephine.
